Healthcare Project in Korail Slum

Marking the beginning of the Gregorian Year, 2015, Good Heal Trust is happy to have made it this far, continuing its services at the Korail Slum.

This month, GHT has given service to a total of 415 patients, including regular clinic patients, advanced consultancy services, follow-ups, referral cases and GHT Health camp patients. For Telemedicine Services, consultancy through Skype was provided to 21 patients. The doctors who provided their services for the telemedicine service were three in number, Dr. Apurbo Kumer Saha (from the Medicine Department)- 13 patients and Dr. Aynul Kabir (from the Medicine Department)- 8 patients.

The GHT team arranges referrals for patients every month in order to give access to the patients to get the medical treatment they require. This month 12 patients were referred to BRAC and Bangladesh Institute for Health Sciences (BIHS).

For education purposes and objectives of seeing overall improvement in hygiene and health matters, Good Heal Trust presents health awareness sessions twice a week on general health to patients at the Slum. These sessions continue to be much needed for many of the families as these are the only sessions they have access to when it comes to medical advice. Advice is given pertaining to personal hygiene, family planning, common diseases amongst women, common diseases present in households and many other issues are discussed.

Focus Group Discussions (FDGs) were held with 605 people within the slum. Senior nurses along with the help of team members help to conduct the sessions. Participants are encouraged to ask questions and requested to pass on the advice received to others.

There were two health camps held, one of the 11th of January and another on the 28th of January. A total of 87 patients were given health services. There were four doctors who provided their services at the camps this month. They were Dr. Apurbo Kumer Saha (from the Medicine Department), Dr. Farhana Khatun (Senior Medical Officer, Gynecologist), BIHS, Dr. Aynul Kabir (from the Medicine Department) and Dr.Farhana Rahat MBBS, FCPS (Pediatric).

The health camps are the only time doctors are present and so many patients are asked to come in during the camps. 65 of the 87 patients registered as newly registered patients. 22 of them were registered from before. Good Heal Trust provides a health card to each new person. A mere Tk50 is charged as the card registration fee. Each card holder patient is also given a registration number. With this card patients are able to avail the health care services that the trust has to offer.

As always, special healthcare screening was given for the following: breast -oral -cervical cancer screening, blood sugar monitoring, health education and diet counseling, pregnancy tests were given for both adults and adolescents and special heath education sessions were held at the slum clinics.

We look forward to seeing how the services at Korail Clinic go this year. Even though the country is going through great political instability, we are hoping for the best.

GHT Okaidi Health Clinic

The new health program for Grameen Shikka’s ten schools in Mirpur, sponsored by and in collaboration with Okaidi has been on-going and gaining momentum in the last month.

The team has been successful in doing awareness sessions pertaining to the importance of brushing one’s teeth, maintaining personal hygiene and eating a proper food diet.  In addition to this, basic medical care was provided to the students of three schools this month. The schools in which health checkups were done for the students are: Muslim Camp, MCC Camp and Consun Camp.

The team also made 600 health cards for all of the students. These will be distributed to the parents and students shortly.

The GHT OKAIDI Clinic Team attended their monthly meeting with Grameen Shikkha School employees on 10th January, 2015. The team shared its objectives and goals for the schools, present health activities and future plans. On 11th January, 2015, a meeting was held with the teachers. The team requested all the teachers to pay close attention to the awareness programs and keep an eye on all of the students, reporting to the clinical team if any medical problems are noted among the students.

A sign board representing the GHT OKAIDI Clinic was made for the clinic door in addition to other small improvements made to bring the clinic more to life.

The team is continuing to work with Bangladesh Institute of Health Science (BIHS) to get essential medical care for the children. It is also in the process to launch Skype sessions (telemedicine services) for the children just as is done at Korail Slum for adults. This is an objective set for the upcoming months. We look forward to continue bringing this project to greater heights this year.

For the betterment and further education of patients on medical issues that most of them are unaware of, Good Heal Trust presents health awareness sessions twice a week on general health to patients of the Korail Slum. These sessions continue to be much needed for many of the families as these are the only sessions they have access to when it comes to medical advice. Advice is given pertaining to personal hygiene, family planning, common diseases amongst women, common diseases present in households and many other issues are discussed. Focus Group Discussions (FDGs) were held with 505 people within the slum. Senior nurses along with the help of team members help to conduct the sessions. We hope the families will benefit from the discussions and invite others to join.

There was only one health camp held this month, held on the 14th of December, 2014. A total of 26 patients were given health services. The doctors who provided service at the camps were the same from last month’s health camps, Dr. Apurbo Kumer Saha (from the Medicine Department) and Dr. Farhana Khatun (Senior Medical Officer), Gulshan Diabetic Center.

The health camps are the only time doctors are present and so many patients are asked to come in during the camps.

16 of the 26 patients registered as newly registered patients. 10 of them were registered from before. Good Heal Trust provides a health card to each new person. A mere Tk50 is charged as the card registration fee. Each card holder patient is also given a registration number. In addition to the above, as always, special healthcare screening was given for the following: breast -oral -cervical cancer screening, blood sugar monitoring, health education and diet counseling, pregnancy tests were given for both adults and adolescents and special heath education sessions were held at the slum clinics.

We look forward to providing our healthcare services in the upcoming year in addition to further improving our services.

GHT Okaidi Health Clinic

GHT is delighted to continue its health program for Grameen Shikka’s ten schools in Mirpur, sponsored by and in collaboration with Okaidi. The team has been successful in doing awareness sessions in addition to starting up basic medical care to the students of these ten schools.

December focused primarily on awareness sessions at these schools. Several health awareness sessions took place this month. The topics covered were: Facial Risk, Mosquito born diseases, Personal Hygiene, Risks Related to Teen Years and Importance of Balanced Diet. The objectives of these sessions were to reduce the spread of diseases, to improve the health of children and to transfer the good practices and knowledge to their family.

The team met with some of the parents of the students on the 28th of December. Progress reports were given and GHT’s objectives/present health services were discussed. Parents were given the platform to ask any questions they had pertaining to the team’s activities.

So far the project is being appreciated by the parents, schools and children. They are finding the initiative important and creative. We hope to continue the good work in the upcoming year and to further establish such initiatives at other schools.

Monthly Newsletter- November 2014

Healthcare Project in Korail Slum

This month, Good Heal Trust has given service to a total of 355 patients, including regular clinic patients, advanced consultancy services, follow-ups, referral cases and GHT Health camp patients. Similar to previous months, GHT’s Telemedicine Services, consultancy through Skype was provided to 3 patients. The doctor who provided his services for the telemedicine service was Dr. Apurbo Kumer Saha (from the Medicine Department)- 3 patients.

As the make shift clinic does not have enough facilities to accommodate and provide patients with the different treatments they require, the GHT team arranges referrals for patients every month. This month 20 patients were referred to different hospitals such as BSMMU, Sorwardi Hospital, Dhaka Medical College Hospital (BMCH), Gulshan Seba House, TB Hospital, Society for Assistance to Hearing Impaired Children (SAHIC), BRAC, Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) and the GHT Camp.

As most of the patients who come are not very educated nor do they have access to good healthcare, medical awareness is lacking. In order to combat this, Good Heal Trust presents health awareness sessions twice a week on general health advice to patients of the Korail Slum. These sessions are much needed for many of the families. Advice pertaining to personal hygiene, family planning, common diseases amongst women, common diseases present in households and many other issues were discussed. Focus Group Discussions (FDGs) were held with 610 people within the slum. Senior nurses along with the help of team members help to conduct the sessions. We hope the families will benefit from the discussions and invite others to join in the upcoming months.

There were two health camps held this month, on the 16th and 26th of November, 2014. A total of 67 patients were given health services in these camps. The doctors who provided service at the camps were the same from last month’s health camps, Dr. Apurbo Kumer Saha (from the Medicine Department) and Dr. Farhana Khatun (Senior Medical Officer), Gulshan Diabetic Center.

Within these camps, not only are adults given service but children from the ages of 0-13 are also given service. As has been noted, a pediatrician helps out during the camp service.

In the camps, a total of 48 patients registered as newly registered patients. 19 of them were registered from before. Good Heal Trust provides a health card to each new person. A mere Tk50 is charged as the card registration fee. Each card holder patient is also given a registration number. With this card patients are able to avail the health care services that the trust has to offer.

In addition to the above, as always, special healthcare screening was given for the following: breast -oral -cervical cancer screening, blood sugar monitoring, health education and diet counseling, pregnancy tests were given for both adults and adolescents and special heath education sessions were held at the slum clinics.

We look forward to providing our healthcare services to those who need it the most.

Nurses’ Skill Enhancement Program

It has officially been one year since the starting of the NSEP program at National Heart Foundation. November was the last month of formal classes. Final exams were conducted in Nursing, English, Grooming and Computers. The nurses will be given their certificates shortly.

The trust is proud to note that the nurses have shown great improvement in the past one year. We hope other hospitals will take note and start up such initiatives for their nursing professional as well. We will keep readers posted regarding further updates on the NSEP project.

GHT Okaidi Health Clinic

As was mentioned in last month’s newsletter, Good Heal Trust is pleased to announce that it has started up a new health program for Grameen Shikka’s ten schools in Mirpur, sponsored by and in collaboration with Okaidi. The team will be providing basic medical care to the students of these ten schools.

In November, a total of 589 children were given basic checkups within the ten schools (each having two shifts). The children’s weight, height, BP and other basic health matters were looked into. Each child has a medical file set for him/her. This will be maintained by the trust whenever the child is given a checkup

This month the trust noted that many children have complained about abdominal pain, joint pain, sight and hearing problems, and skin related problems. The team has recommended different doctors for the children according to their medical needs.

The health awareness session that took place this month was related to hand washing. As these sessions are important for the children, the trust has paid great attention to delivering interactive sessions. The objectives of the hand wash sessions were to reduce the spread of diseases, to improve the health of children and to transfer the good practices to their family.

The project has kicked off to a good start. Many of the children’s parents were happy that such an initiative has been taken to look into the medical well being of their children. We hope to work in collaboration with the teachers, parents and all those concerned with the well being of the children of these schools.

The team is working with Bangladesh Institute of Health Science (BIHS) to get essential medical care for the children. It is also looking forward to starting up Skype sessions (telemedicine services) for the children in the upcoming months. We look forward to continue bringing this project to greater heights.

This month, Good Heal Trust has given service to a total of 268 patients, including regular clinic patients, advanced consultancy services, follow-ups, referral cases and GHT Health camp patients. The two doctors who provided their services through Skype were Dr. Aynul Kabir (from the Medicine Department)- 3 patient and Dr. Apurbo Kumer Saha (from the Medicine Department)- 2 patients.

As the make shift clinic does not have enough facilities to accommodate and provide patients with the different treatments they require, the GHT team arranges referrals for patients every month. This month 33 patients were referred to different hospitals such as BSMMU, Sorwardi Hospital, Dhaka Medical College Hospital (BMCH), Gulshan Seba House, TB Hospital, Society for Assistance to Hearing Impaired Children (SAHIC), BRAC, Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) and the GHT Camp.

Focus Group Discussions (FDGs) were held with 550 people within the slum. Senior nurses along with the help of team members help to conduct the sessions. We hope the families will benefit from the discussions and invite others to join in the upcoming months.

There were two health camps held this month, on the 24th and 26th of October, 2014. A total of 82 patients were given health services in these camps. The doctors who provided service at the camps were Dr.

In the camps, a total of 32 patients registered as newly registered patients. 25 of them were newly registered and 7 of them were registered from before.

With winter around the corner, GHT is expecting more patients during the winter season. Especially children and the elderly as the cold tends to effect them the most.

We hope next month we will be able to extend our services to more patients.

Nurses’ Skill Enhancement Program

The Nurses Skills Enhancement Program has come to an end at Birdem. Final exams were conducted in Nursing, English, Grooming and Computers. As the Nursing faculty had to leave by the end of October, Nursing sessions have concluded at National Heart Foundation. However, English, Computers and Grooming will continue until the end of November at NHF. The nurses have shown great improvement in the past one year. GHT hopes to continue the program with other hospitals in the upcoming months.  We will keep readers posted regarding all the updates on the NSEP project.

GHT Okaidi Health Clinic

Good Heal Trust is pleased to announce that it has started up a new health program for Grameen Shikka’s ten schools in Mirpur, sponsored by and in collaboration with Okaidi. The team will be providing basic medical care to the students of these ten schools.

On 27-October-2014, a medical checkup was held for the students of one of the schools. 30 students were given a checkup within 2 hours. The children’s weight, height, BP and other basic health matters were looked into. Each child has a medical file set for him/her. This will be maintained by the trust whenever the child is given a checkup. It was indeed very sad to note that 50% of those checked were underweight and 73% of the children had anemia. The team has recommended different doctors for the children according to their medical needs.

This month, the trust has had three university students from France join the GHT Okaidi Health Clinic for their internship work. They are working for prevention and awareness amongst the children. They visited two of the schools and have done their health awareness activity along with our Clinic Nurses.  The topic was ‘Hand Washing.’

The team plans to have meetings with the parents to collect the medical history of each child. We hope to work in collaboration with the teachers, parents and all those concerned with the well being of the children of these schools. We look forward to bringing this project to greater heights in the upcoming months.

Healthcare Project in Korail Slum

Good Heal Trust is pleased to have completed another month of services and is proud to be back in action after the Eid Holidays. This month, the program coordinator for the Outreach Program at Korail, Noor-E-Mahboba left for abroad. Her position was replaced by Liimon John, another member who has been a part of the team from the onset. It may take some time for Mr. Limon to get into the shoes that Ms. Noor left behind and get a good grasp of the work left behind. The trust is working to ensure the same level of care and dedication is provided to the patients as the previous months. We are confident that Mr. Limon will also do a great job and bring about new accomplishments for the team.
